Having It All (or at Least Trying to) In The Digital Age
After Lily was born, I was miserable leaving her and going back to work. But there didn't seem to be any reasonable alternative, unless we wanted to starve. I figured I'd slog through those early months and eventually get used to the reality of being yet another working mom. But I never did get used to it. Sitting at my desk in a windowless office, my heart was always miles away with Lily.
When the bank I worked for suddenly imploded and was bought out, I knew my job was in serious jeopardy. But I was secretly thrilled! Here, suddenly, like a gift, was an opportunity to make a change. I did a lot of research and eventually enrolled in one of the top online schools in the country for medical transcription, knowing that most of the industry was now made up of virtual companies, based almost exclusively online, with whole armies of workers happily employed from the comfort of their own homes.
It took a lot of hard work and many late nights, but a year and a week after enrolling I finally finished the course, and with a very nice GPA if I may be permitted to brag a little. Applying and testing with nearly a dozen medical transcription companies was unexpectedly grueling, but less than three weeks after graduating, I had two job offers to work from home as a medical transcriptionist. I accepted the first one from a company that came highly recommended by some fellow MTs. I got exactly the schedule I had hoped for (working while Lily is sleeping). Heck, I even got a computer thrown into the deal. And I sure do love the commute. My first day is tomorrow!
It will be a lot of hard work in the beginning, and it will be a significant reduction in salary, but we won't starve (at least I hope not). The best part, the part that makes it all worthwhile, is that I don't have to give up being Lily's full-time mother even though I will be working full time. We'll still have our mornings together to walk around town and play, we'll still cook dinner together in the late afternoon and eat with Daddy when he comes home for his evening dinner break, and we'll still have bath and bedtime together.
I'm so lucky. We're so lucky.

YAYYYY! And congrats.
Good luck with the balance ... it can be a toughie in new and different ways, but I'm sure you'll manage it. Who knows? Maybe one day you'll REALLY go insane and decide to homeschool (ahem)!
Today was a great day, by the way. Some are up, some are down, but day by day, we're swinging, and it's an adventure that would be hard duplicate in another fashion.
