Hilton Head-Savannah, Part I: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
I'm not sure how soon we'll be jetting off for another vacation after our trip this past week to visit with Nana and Pop in Hilton Head and Savannah. Nothing against either location, I assure you. We adore Savannah. It's just that the travel gods were not with us on this one. Here are some of the high (and low) points.
Bad: The girl woke up last Saturday morning looking quite listless and running a fever. She had been sick, very sick, with the stomach flu for two days, and we had hoped she'd have been over it by this time. She had been singing and playing quite happily the night before. It seemed a good sign.
Ugly: Sadly, poor Lily was most decidedly not over her sickness just yet. To prove it, she vomited copiously just as we parked the car at the airport.
Good: We made it to the airport just in the nick of time that morning to clean the girl up somewhat, get through security, and slip nervously onto the tiny, cramped, and grimy commuter jet that was to get us through the first leg of our trip to Washington DC.
Good: To our very great surprise and relief, Lily did not loose her lunch on either the first or second flight. Instead, the little angel slept soundly, thanks in part to the pre-flight dose of Benadryl recommended by her doctor. Thanks, doc!
Good: Lily did experience the unavoidable diarrhea that comes with having the stomach flu, but she was gracious enough to save the isolated episode for the two-hour layover in DC where the restroom changing areas were relatively clean and spacious.

On the way to the airport, draped in a towel just in case...

A better baby at 20,000 feet there never was.
We finally arrived at Hilton Head later that evening, exhausted, but happy that the worst seemed to be over. Or maybe not.
Ugly: Exactly 36 hours after our arrival, Daddy and Nana both picked up where Lily left off. I won't go into detail and will only offer that this was one helluva nasty stomach flu. It took a full two days before either of them could venture out of bed and another full day after that before any attempt at solid food could be made.
Good: While the patients convalesced, Mom and Lily took some time to get to know Hilton Head Island. We took long walks and rode a bike through our plantation looking for turtles and alligators and squirrels and birds.

Ugly: By Wednesday, Mom and Pop were smugly congratulating themselves on escaping the late unpleasantness. That was, unitl Pop got sick.
Good: In the meantime, Mom and Lily continued to play and explore together. Lily made a new friend in Bo, and she even learned to say his name in her own adorable way, "Bo-bo."

By midweek, Daddy was finally feeling well enough to venture out, and so we explored one of our most favorite cities, Savannah, for the afternoon.

Daddy and Lily admire some of the lush Savannah architecture.

Lily claps along as Mommy sings the Muffin Man song, by request, for about the millionth time.
By the end of the week, order was restored to the Harper household, just in time for us to say farewell to the sunny South. We missed the warmer weather and the bright sunshine, but we sure were happy to get home, safely and uneventfully.

Awww! I'm so sorry to hear that the Travel Gods were looking the other way on your trip! It does look as though Lily had a great time on the beach though! Excellent! Teach em while they are young how much fun sand and water can be!
She had such a good time playing in the sand and water that we decided we need to institute a formal family vacation to the beach each summer. Some of my fondest memories as a child are of summers spent at the beach, and hopefully Lily will have the same.
